A short introduction to my work
Initially, my sculptures resembled architectural parts – or parts isolated from the built environment, like doors and windows. Working on the sculptures was tough and developing new works always seemed to lead to larger sizes. Therefore I started to work on computer animated films that concerned the built environment as well; I could put a whole exhibition in one film. A while later I decided to add murals to the architectural environments which, over the years, made my attention shift to history painting.

I posed the question: if these spaces would be covered with murals, what kind of iconography would they show? What would muralism, like that of Diego Rivera, look like when it would be practised in the present?

I started to develop series of water colours that would figure in the animations as murals. The first water colours and animations concerned the avant-garde movements and the political left. Later I concentrated on youths and the idea of freedom.

Recently I was asked to execute the paintings on a large scale for Art Centre De Appel in Amsterdam. The curator simply stated: No nonsense anymore; it must be big. It is for this purpose I wrote a text - a text you will find one day on one of the pages in this site - which, hopefully, will also serve as an introduction to the motives behind my work in a more general way. However, with or without explanation, I hope you can and will enjoy the work.

Active as an independent artist since 1984 – initially as sculptor, later also as painter and film maker (computer animated films).

Awards
1987: Prix de Rome, 1st prize sculpture, 1998: Dr. A. H. Heinekenprijs for the Arts.

Lectures and teachings
From 1988 onward: lectures for several educational projects in several places, mostly academies of arts. I have been guest teacher at several institutions, and teacher for longer periods since 1988 in Arnhem, at the department of the arts and of applied arts. I also worked as representative commissioner visiting exams (Dutch: “rijksgecommitteerde”, later “gecommitteerde”) of both classes and individual artists. From 1999 till 2003 i was advisor for several commissions, aforemost for Fonds voor beeldende kunsten – the state council for stipends in Amsterdam.

Exhibitions
Solo-expositions in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (2016), the Centraal Museum Utrecht (1992), Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam 1998), expositions at galerie Albert Baronian (Brussel, 1988), galerie Brugues la Morte (Brugge, 1989-1991), galerie Paul Andriesse (Amsterdam, 1991 to the present); I did partake in manifestations as Sonsbeek ’93 (Arnhem), Artranspennine (Kingston upon Hull, 1998). Films / Filme was an overview of all films I made in Der Kunstbunker, Nürnberg, 2012 / 2013.

Works
Works in public collections in, among others, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven, Kröller-Müller museum, Otterlo, and De Verbeelding, Zeewolde. A work was commissioned for When Elephants Come Marching in, an exposition curated by Mark Kremer for Art Centre De Appel in Amsterdam, 2014.

Studies

een korte introductie bij mijn werk
Aanvankelijk maakte ik ruimtelijke werken die waren opgebouwd uit architectonische elementen, geïsoleerd uit de gebouwde omgeving, zoals deuren en ramen. Terugkerend thema was het theater: de tribune en het publiek. Vanaf 1994 werkte ik daarnaast met computer geanimeerde films - ik kon een hele tentoonstelling in één film stoppen. Ook de films betroffen de gebouwde ruimte. Na verloop van tijd voegde ik wandschilderingen aan de ruimtes toe.

Ik stelde me bij die wandschilderingen de vraag naar de iconografie: wat zouden zij laten zien? Hoe zou bijvoorbeeld het muralisme er uitzien in deze tijd? Wat kun je formuleren in de leemte nadat de historieschilderkunst verloren is gegaan?

Ik begon een serie aquarellen die in de computeranimaties als wandschildering zouden fungeren. De eerste aquarellen en animaties hadden te maken met de avant garde-beweging en politiek links. Later met jeugd en het idee van vrijheid.

Een paar jaar geleden werd ik gevraagd om de figuratie als schildering uit te voeren voor de tentoonstellingsruimte De Appel in Amsterdam. De curator zei: Geen flauwekul. Het moet groot.

Nu werk ik aan re-enactments die uitgaan van episch theater - van het schilderij als een podium met acteurs.
